Hello everyone,
after a long discussion and hacking weekend, we can now announce the first release candidate for RTnet 0.7.0. We were able to test RTnet on a mixed x86/PPC setup, discover a hidden endian problem in RTcfg and fix it. Further cleanups and fixings of minor cosmetic issues are also included.
Unfortunately, the port of RTnet to kernel 2.6 turned out to be more complex than expected, foremost due to the new build process. This goal is not canceled but deferred to one of the next releases.
We discussed concepts and strategies to revise the TDMA media access control discipline of RTnet in order to fix some issues during the network startup process and to provide hot-plugging of real-time nodes into a running network. I'm personally convinced that, as soon as this final major work package is completed, RTnet is ready for a 1.0 release!
Another topic of the weekend was the new API framework of RTnet 0.7.0 (RTDM) and strategies to extend it for some kind of select_rt support which is required for the RTAI ACE/TAO port. The concept we currently have in mind and which will probably be implemented soon may not only provide this feature to RTnet sockets but to any device file descriptor which is offered through RTDM. I.e., in the future, you may be able to block on some serial device and RTnet UDP socket at the same time with a single real-time thread.
We also started a new effort to improve the documentation of RTnet. A small step towards a more thorough guide are the presentation slides about the 0.7.0 API available from the documentation page together with two further presentations of this weekend:

A complete documentation framework will be set up soon when we figured out which license fits best.
And, of course, we watched and intensively discussed a boring German/Latvian and a thrilling Dutch/Czech football match... :)
