Hi, all,

I am a master student in Netherlands and I am starting my final project.

The project is to use Firewire in real-time control, so my first step is to
let the current Firewire linux driver work in

real-time domain (rtai). One of the several options turns out to be most
realizable, which is to add Firewire support in RTnet.

Well, this sounds very interesting!

Since I have just begun to touch RTnet, I would like to ask if anyone has
added or been working on the Firewire support to RTnet.

If you search the RTnet's mailing list archive, you will find some short discussions about this topic. But so far, there is at least no official Firewire layer available for RTnet, and I don't know of anyone working on this.

Anyone can give me any suggestions or hints for the implementation?

The easiest way to integrate a new transport medium might be to implement drivers according to the model RTnet currently demands for Ethernet (it is much like the Linux network device model). But I don't know Firewire in details to assess if there might be the need to extend this model in order to gain more of the specific features Firewire provides, especially if they improve the determinism or reduce the overhead. Do you already examined the Firewire driver layers of other OSes like Linux or Windows? Does the IEEE1394 specify any certain model like USB does?

Btw, do we have another devel. mailing list for RTnet, like the [EMAIL PROTECTED] in 1394 community?

As the RTnet list still shows only moderate traffic, there was no need for such a separation so far. In case the traffic increases or becomes very low-level technical, we will certainly consider such a step.

As you can also see on our roadmap, Firewire support would be warmly welcomed. So, if you are going to work on this, we will try our best to support you whenever there are questions about the RTnet architecture and implementation. Furthermore, we will try to extend the framework (or discuss your extensions) in case modifications are required. And we would certainly be happy to integrate your work into the main branch afterwards!
