Do you already know about socket programming to generate UDP packets on a "normal" network? If not, then try this first; it's much easier than starting in a realtime environment. Then set up a working RTAI on your machines and test them (using /usr/realtime/testsuite/*). Then set up RTnet on all machines and try to ping each others (rtping will be your friend).
