A student of mine is working now on a diploma thesis that will provide RTnet
support for PCMCIA. There should be a driver for at least one NIC. The thesis
should be finished in about six months.

Great news, will put a notice on the roadmap ;). You may motivate your student to discuss technical questions regarding the RTnet design on the developer mailing list. This can help to overcome documentation gaps more quickly.

PS: The SVN now contains a protocol management subsystem that is able to handle hash key collisions of Ethernet protocols similar to your patch. It still doesn't allow per-interface registration, but this might be patchable in a second step (as a compile-time option).
