Without having had this closer look, my impression is that the updated
autotools in current RTnet start to become incompatible with our aging
build environment. I do not have latest autotools on my build machine,
if you have, you could try running scripts/autogen.sh and check if it
was actually a regression in my versions. Otherwise: Well, you already
found a workaround... :)
