Well, that certainly depends on the use case, what kind of data needs to be stored, how much of it and how often. There's of course plain text as you guessed, Marshal, PStore (basically Marshal with transactions built around), YAML, JSON, CSV (not all supported out of the box but gems can be installed pretty easily).
