I've been able to resolve my own problem by manually searching for and then downloading the .gem files I need from their respective RubyForge projects. Then attempting to install from the file, discovering new dependencies... rinse.. lather.. repeat. Painful, yes, but less painful that watching gem install do nothing for 8 hours.
