I'm the developer of that plugin.

Trac seems to be down, so I can't refer you to the ticket that spawned
this plugin, but my patch was rejected due to parts of the human
attribute functionality that's currently in rails being deprecated in
rails 2.

So afaik, using the plugin is the only way to do what you're looking
for now and in the future.
