Shared hosting really just isn't going to be reliable for your app.  
Topfunky recently did a nice review of Rails hosting options:

I would recommend going w/ a VPS (provided you're able to manage one  
yourself). Personally, I've been using  Slicehost for several months  
and have had a great experience with them.
