One component of thenewsroom.com uses Apache + mod_proxy_balancer +
Mongrel and does 45-50 hits a second.  The only relevant differences
that I can see is that we're using Apache 2.2.4 and the prefork worker.
Might be worth trying prefork to see if that helps.
