That book is great...but it should be updated to focus on using Passenger instead of mongrel.
I went the mongrel route after reading that book, and just recently switched over to Passenger...it is *much* more stable and easier to deploy. No need for monit or god to manage mongrel instances. My app has not crashed since the switch.
