I ran into the same issue and wrote a little script that handles the json serialization and ajax request all in one, basically you just pass it your json object and it returns the response object, already serialized. if that sounds like something you could use, have a look: http://blog.greghinch.com/2007/01/jsontransmit-for-prototype/
