Safari was essential during the period when IE stopped development on
the Mac, and before Firefox (formerly Firebird, formerly Phoenix)
matured. It is also necessary, as it provides an API that other OS X
applications can use to display web-type content. That's not
something Firefox shares with the rest of the OS. (And Safari
requires a smaller memory footprint, which it manages better than
Firefox does.)

Most of the problems you complain about have been fixed in the WebKit
repository--the trouble is Apple has not released it as a "forced"
update to Safari. Speculation in prior threads on this list is that
the updates will come with the new major release of OS X.
