I'm not convinced it's a z-index issue. Can you post a working example? You can also try using the onUpdate callback or a Sortable observer (see a sample SortableObserver in dragdrop.js) to make whatever manipulations you need at the end of the drag. http://wiki.script.aculo.us/scriptaculous/show/Sortable.create
