Occurs to me the :sum and :select might conflict.

Try also:

     Subscriber.find( :first, :select => 'sum(compensation + perks) AS 
salaries',
                       :conditions => { :magazine_id => id } )

You could also use :all, then group by 'magazine_id', to just rip them all at 
once.
