I have installed everything through MacPorts because it allowed me to better
maintain
my Ruby and Rails development environment even after an upgrade of Mac OS.
 Thus,
I would recommend not installing anything in subdirectory /usr.  At this
time, all my
RoR components are installed in /opt.
