I have tried that and I am still getting:

WARNING:  Installing to ~/.gem since /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8 and
          /usr/bin aren't both writable.
WARNING:  You don't have /Users/myhome/.gem/ruby/1.8/bin in your PATH,
          gem executables will not run.

it says that the gem installed successfully, and i see it listed with
gem list, but when I launch the server, it kills b/c it cannot find
the gem.
