I started trying to learn Ruby on Rails from a course on Lynda.com.
Unfortunately, I got stuck early on after installing things. First, I got an
error trying to install a first application called simple_cms. I read a bit
about the error (after doing a web search) and found directions telling me to
get DevKit and run about 3 commands. The config file only had one line in it
that would be effected by DevKit and that was my ruby folder c:\Ruby193.
Then I was able to run: rails new simple_cms -d mysql
and I think it was successful. The instructor suggested the Webbrick server.
This would not start for me. This is one of those cases where it would help to
have the output of errors and other messages to share and try to get help
figuring out what went wrong.
Since, I have done development in other languages, I changed to
installing the app into a folder under xampp\htdocs which seemed to work until
I got to the next step of generating a controller. It failed to create
controller demo with view index.
Any suggestions as to what I should do? I am using Windows 7 64 bit. I
do have VirtualBox and Ubuntu Server 12.04 installed also but I ran into
problems with getting ruby on rails up and running in that also. For now, I
guess, I'd like to first figure out how to get this running in my Windows
environment.
