I would use
scopes<http://guides.rubyonrails.org/active_record_querying.html#scopes>for
late or "due soon" projects.
class Project < ActiveRecord::Base
scope :late, -> { where("some_time_attr > ?", Time.now) }
end
So, then you can call the following in your Controller:
@projects = Project.late
