I didn't read through everything, but why not also think of buying a cheap laptop and then dropping a modern Linux distro on the thing? I run Ubuntu on my Thinkpad X40 and could not be happier with it ... well, if they had a SSD that worked with my laptop I'd be a little bit happier.
