Thanks for that Colin, def test_should_make_date applicant = Applicant.new(valid_applicant_attributes(:date_of_birth => "")) applicant.dob_day = "01" applicant.dob_month = "01" applicant.dob_year = "1999" assert_equal "01-01-1999", applicant.date_of_birth end works (as you might expect) absolutely fine.
