I think IDEs are important too, and will always be better in a static typed language like java. I haven't seen a ruby (or python) IDE that comes close to the java IDEs. Look at Google Web Toolkit. I hate java, but I still use GWT for ajax apps instead of rails. (And by the way, it has an awesome discussion list :)
