Look in config/environment.rb for a line like this, or add it if necessary: # Specifies gem version of Rails to use when vendor/rails is not present RAILS_GEM_VERSION = '2.3.5' unless defined? RAILS_GEM_VERSION Or as implied by the comment, freeze rails (AKA vendoring Rails). Google 'freeze Rails' for implementation details.
