I don't think this is true. According to the Rails API<http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveRecord/Associations/ClassMethods.html#M000645>, this is what collection.delete does with a has_and_belongs_to_many association:
"Removes one or more objects from the collection by removing their associations from the join table. This does not destroy the objects."
