I followed your advice and validated the markup and css at w3c and it passed the validation as an html5 document (and the css also was fine). Cleared firefox's cache as well but still it can't execute the @font- face.
Installed the firebug plugin and from what it seems there's no error... firefox just doesnt load any @font-face i set at all through rails. If i open the (seperate) html file i keep for draft design it works just fine. Also i connected to the WEBrick server with my iphone to see if mobile safari loads it as well and it turns out it doesnt.
