Assalamu'alaikum In Indonesia, the decision of 1st Syawwal 1429 AH equal to Wednesday 1st October 2008 came from crescent watch campaign at Sunday 29th September 2008 (or 29th Ramadhan 1429 AH, based on crescent sighting 31st August 2008) that no crescent sighting report was produced, because majority of observers know at that time the crescent wouldn't seen at whole Indonesian archipelago because moonset happened before sunset. Then was appointed to istikmal.
Small groups of Moslem here like jama'ah al Muhdlor East Java celebrated Eid al Fitr at Sunday 29th September 2008 solely based on calculation that not depend at Sun - Moon position. Others like Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, Jama'ah Muslimin Hizbullah and Ahmadiyya celebrated at Tuesday 30th September 2008 based on Saudi decision and justify it with "false sighting" from Mindanao, Yaman, Qatar and Saudi itself. Others like thariqah Naqsyabandiyah on Jombang (East Java) and thariqah Syattariyah (West Sumatra) celebrated on Thursday 2nd October 2008 solely based on claim that the young crescent was not seen when observed at Tuesday 30th September 2008 with naked eye on basis the western sky (especially at East Java and West Sumatra) covered or partially covered by clouds and then was appointed to istikmal. As background, they began 1st Ramadhan at Tuesday 2nd September 2008, separated from government decision. They decision was very debatable and wrong because RHI member in East Java succesfully observed and recorded the young crescent at Tuesday 30th September 2008, both with naked eye or optical aid. And others like jama'ah Aboge in East and Central Java celebrated Eid al Fitr on Friday 3rd October 2008 solely based on claim that the young crescent was not seen when observed at Wednesday 30th September 2008 with naked eye and then was appointed to istikmal. As background, they began 1st Ramadhan at Wednesday 3rd September 2008, also separated from government decision. They decision was also very debatable and wrong.
