Ed, I may be missing something but this problem is already solved by something like Mule or Spring Integration [http://static.springsource.org/spring-integration/reference/htmlsingle/spring-integration-reference.html#endpoint-handler] (which is actually build on top of Enterprise Integration Patterns).
