Using log4j.xml (or better yet, logback.xml) is described in the manual: http://docs.jboss.org/drools/release/5.4.0.Beta1/drools-planner-docs/html_single/index.html#d0e2450 A couple of weeks ago, I even improved that section for 5.4.0.Beta2 which will be out soon.
