`gensym` is not available in Scheme's macro-by-example facility, because it is specified to be hygienic, meaning that it automatically avoids name collisions (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hygienic_macro ). Rust's macro system is not yet hygienic, but I believe that this is under active development.
