Haskell also has laziness, garbage collection and immutable shared data structures. They don't really care about memory usage before they've actually gone OOM.

Still, even STM has semaphores and bounded queues, and the user is expected to choose the right data structure for their needs. Also, it's trivial to write an STM function that can select on different channels if the write blocks.
