For complete unicode support you'll have to go elsewhere, as neither mlterm
nor rxvt-uncidoe offer that (nor any other terminal I know off).

Last I looked, what you describe is indeed the situation: mlterm has more
support for weird stuff such as vertical writing or shaping. If you want
support for that, mlterm is the way to go (mlterm is also pretty lean and
fast as well). OTOH, urxvt is more versatile regarding font configuration
(which was pretty limited in mlterm last I looked), and in an environment
where you work with multiple languages/scripts, urxvt might be better
suited, as long as they don't depend on the unique mlterm features.

basically, rxvt-unicode has more features for productive working (and also
eye-candy), mlterm has the better scripting support, which is what it boils
down.

I would recommend trying out both to see what fits your needs better.
