I have Deja Vu fonts installed and that command works perfectly for me,
which leads me to believe that something is missing in your
configuration. Did you remember to run fc-cache after you installed the
Deja Vu fonts?

UBUNTU Gutsy Gibbon with How can I make urxvt to use fonts ?
