I have Deja Vu fonts installed and that command works perfectly for me, which leads me to believe that something is missing in your configuration. Did you remember to run fc-cache after you installed the Deja Vu fonts?

I just installed urxvt from CVS pullout and I get this:

I don't understand it. DejaVu fonts are installed and configured to use by
X on my system. This is relevant part of /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section "Files"
        RgbPath "/etc/X11/rgb"
        ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-bitstream-vera"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont"
        FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType"
EndSection
