An obvious difference is that tabbed has to set the window geometry and
hints seperately for each tab - if your window manager ignores changing
window hints, then it would be easy to get that behaviour.

Thats a similar issue, but this time on the side of urxvt - the geometry
is for the tab, and gets ignored as the tab isn't the top-level window
anymore.

That would be consistent with your window manager ignoring the changed
window hints - if you resize, it would look at them again.

You can check for this by trying a known good window manager (fvwm for
example).
