you completely miss the point - | is also a common URL separator, precisely
because it's not allowed in a URL.

that some browsers are unbelievably broken is a pitty and make useful
application of URLs needless hard is rather idiotic of them, but that's
why it's configurable - if you mainly have urls pasted from a broken
chromium in your terminal, then you should change the pattern.

it would be much better to report this bug against those browsers
that break other existing applications, this will eventually lead to
interoperable implementations (the whole point of having documents
standardising what a URL is is interoperability - if firefox/chromium
don't follow it, your energy in making things better should be directed at
them).
