We do, this would be a great use of the unused index space. It's not
something we would have thought about, and giving up one bit in the 88 colour
case is a great trade-off to get this feature.
In addition, one could (in theory) even improve the colour fidelity by
using something better than a linear rgb cube (or use the remaining
indices) in the future without introducing incompatibilities, since the
implementation is completely hidden.
I don't think even searching through a palette with a nontrivial weighting
function would be too slow in practise. These are all ideas for some
possible future version, of course.
