Or you can use X resources, e.g.:

  Rxvt*color0:            Black
  Rxvt*color1:            Red
  Rxvt*color2:            Green
  Rxvt*color3:            Yellow
  Rxvt*color4:            MediumSlateBlue
  Rxvt*color5:            Gray
  Rxvt*color6:            Cyan
  Rxvt*color7:            White
