Probably not doing anything silly. I get the same results on a linux
box with rxvt 2.7.9 configured as:

./configure --enable-languages --enable-rxvt-scroll --enable-xgetdefault
--enable-mousewheel --enable-smart-resize --with-term=rxvt

(i686-pc-linux-gnu box)

and the applicable Rxvt resources are minimal:
Rxvt.cursorColor: red
Rxvt.inheritPixmap: false
Rxvt.termName: rxvt
Rxvt.cutchars: \"&()*,:<>=?@[]{}|;
Rxvt.meta8: false
Rxvt*modifier: alt

Well, it *is* a development release. :)

krjw.
