Hi,

I am a researcher from the Aalto University of Finland. I'm particularly
interested in SDN and OpenFlow. I have been following you work for quite some
time already and I wanted to congratulate you for the great effort and quality.
We have chosen Ryu as the default SDN Controller in our research and
experiments. We hope to contribute in the future to its development too.

After trying a number of OF software switches, I landed on your certification
site. It was actually quite amazing to see all the testing that has been done
on different software and hardware equipment. However, and this is the main
reason of my email, in my attempt to replicate your results I am hitting a wall.

I am using VirtualBox machines running Ubuntu server editions. The networking
uses Intel NICs (e1000 driver), compatible with Intel DPDK and also virtio. The
only difference between these 2 is performance, really. There is no VLAN
stripping in any of the interfaces and MPLS also works correctly. I have
configured 2 machines to serve as OF switches, following the instructions.
There are 3 interfaces between each other. The connection to the controller is
on a different interface (out-of-band). To avoid problems, the offloading has
been disabled from all interfaces via the ethtool package.

I am testing Lagopus (DPDK), OpenvSwitch (kernel and userspace), CPqD
(ofsoftswitch13) and LINC. For example, I tried testing a Lagopus, so I chose
Lagopus for both test switch and auxiliary switch (for maximum compatibility,
or so I thought). The results obtained are far from what you have in your
website. The following tests were conducted just for the action and set field;
as you can see the results are quite bad (see figure below).

Could you explain to me how did you do your tests? I'm afraid I must be doing
something really wrong to achieve these results... What have you used as
auxiliary switch?

Thank you very much!

Best regards,
Jesus Llorente

PS: I have some ideas that I'd like also to discuss with you about future
development of Ryu and extra functionality.
