There is an incomplete changeset on the [crawl] branch of S-nail, which' final version in v14.8 (presumably late spring 2015) will get around this Python bug. I.e., what happens is that the `smtp_auth_var' is embedded into a =?..?= MIME construct and the i think Python software falsely strips away surrounding whitespace. This is a bug. The problem with S-nail is that it uses the =?..?= construct at all, since the entire line is plain ASCII and could be send over the wire as is. (The underscore is a trigger character, which is perfectly fine, but it shouldn't actually be the **cause** of switching from plain text to MIME encoding by itself. This behaviour will be addressed in a later version.)
