No, not that i know of. I think that the outer level is sorted according to the by-date of those messages which form the roots. Gunnar Ritter implemented that nice property that messages which are new can be seen even if threads are collapsed, but once they have been read they disappear in the thread they belong to. This is a good suggestion, though, i'll add it to TODO for later. (It cannot happen for v14.9 because it touches one aspect of core functionality, message storage.)
