Subject: [S-Scale Modeling] RE: terminal code
The Chicago Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific RR in Bensenville IL in the late 70's
and early 80's had heavy rail (115lb?) worn down to light rail around their engine
terminal off of Green St. The rail heads were quite worn down and mushroomed from the
weight of the engines that were constantly moving back and forth through the shops
area and the turn table/ locomotive storage area. Back then they ran FM switchers as
well as SD45's. The Milwaukee road was just about broke back then, but there was
plenty of evidence that the road had once enjoyed better financial times.
The Chicago & Northwestern during the same time period had 100 lb. rail worn
down to 60 at its West Chicago yards including the locomotive area. It was not much
better than the Milwaukee's track although much straighter. Again, little SW switchers
as well as SD45's, and a fleet of Cab units and commuter cars ran through there. This
track now under UP control is still substandard ( IMHO) for the coal trains that
traverse this daily.
The time period you are modeling and what the financial condition of your
railroad determines how well the this part of your railroad is maintained. Locomotive
servicing areas did not get to much maintenance mainly because the engines did not go
very fast in yard areas. Most all railroads spent proportionately with their needs on
their terminals when built and then never looked back until forced to. If you are
planning on modeling the modern Union Pacific or Norfolk and Western and your road is
a real cash cow ( coal line) then use the code 100. For just about any other road use
your imagination (artistic license) and have fun!
( not an educated opinion - just an observant one)
