Yes, the general perception seems to be that the American Models
lighweight cars are short. They scale out to be 81 3/4 feet between
the end sills. This is about 1 foot short for most prototype cars.
The Pullman Standard built Shasta Daylight cars were 82' 10" between
end sills. Laser Horizons automatically "adjusts" for this
disparity if you specify that they are for American Models shells.

There were, however, prototype P/S lightweight cars that were 79 to
82 feet in length, so be careful of what you model or order. Even
if your prototype is 79 feet, Dennis can adjust it for the AM length
with no perceptible visual difference. I had him do one for me so I
didn't have to cut up the shell for a few feet of difference.

For what it's worth, lightweight passenger cars seem to have varied
throughout the history of S scale. The original Chester cars
with "screw-on" ends scaled out to an even 82 feet. Their second
generation version from JC with cast ends scaled out at a longer 82
feet, 9 inches.
