I'm in the process of doing that. The plastic running board can be pried off. The cover will need to be repainted. Conrail appears to have favored this style of roof- it seems to be on all of the CR covered gons that I can document. A few photo searches seem to indicate that other roads tended to go with molded fiberglass tops on their newer covered gondolas.
