lived in Jackson, TN, where the GM&O was the "hometown" railroad and
northern terminus of the original Rebel.  He was an engineer for the
Illinois Central, however, at the time of his death.  The IC also served
Jackson, TN.  There is a museum in his house - now moved to a more
commercial location.

Not to beat a lame horse but to bring correct information on this 
matter of John Luther Jones.
The song has nothing to do with the UP. Casey Jones first worked for 
the M&O (Mobile and Ohio) before they merged with the Gulf and 
Northern,  Yep, they named it the Gulf Mobile and Ohio. The greatest 
North/South Class 1 railroad in the Universe.... IMO :-}
