Seems to me I read an article in "Model Railroader" a long time ago about that type of layout. IIRC a double ended staging yard was used to run trains out onto the layout. The layout modeled was a bridge line with little on line industry. Essentially it was for running several trains at once and a dispatcher would be used for planning the meets of opposing trains. I always liked that idea, since it fit the Western Pacific Feather River canyon route. Lots of action and spectacular scenery, like bridges, cuts, fills and tunnels. A long narrow layout with a long staging yard behind or underneath to hold the trains. DCC would fit into an operation such as this very well IMO. I had forgotten about that article, thanks for memory jog.
