Dear Clark,
AC Gilbert offered these as LNE 2 bay 50 ton hoppers before WWII for
his S on O line. The bodies had opening hopper bays and the body was
made of zamac. If you look at the "Car Builders Cyclopedia" at the
time, you can find a photo of what I believe is the prototype of this
33' (inside length). They were built by the Bethlehelm Steel Company in
1939. From the photo you can see that the model has the correct number
of ribs and ladder rungs. I am not sure if they are still available,
but Ace Model Railwasy Supply did make zamac bolsters for these so that
other trucks closer to S scale could be used. I have seen these over
the years, with all of the hand rails have been removed and replaced
with wire (0.016"). A center sill, brake details and hopper door
latches can be added. One problem with any conversion an offset hopper
is the interior. As the top part of the braces that can be seen from
the outside, should continue down the inside of the car.
