In the interest of full disclosure, Airslide covered hoppers do exist 
in S Scale.  Two versions were made in brass back in 1988.  You can 
still find them on occasion at shows or on eBay.  Photos of the two 
versions can be seen at:

One or two make a nice addition to any contemporary freight.  Back in 
1988 it is regrettable we did not have the money to also build the 
double airslide version so prevalent today in dry, bulk commodity 
service.  Also, Amity Star did a kit some years ago for a 53'(?) PFE 
outside-post mechanical reefer.  While the kits are probably rare, 
I'm sure the instructions and drawings are out there and could be 
used to build a nice model from styrene.

On the "still needed" side for contemproary trains are a good center 
beam flat car for forest products and (at least in the Midwest) the 
Thrall and/or Evans coil cars.
