In their lettering sets, SHS recommends alcohol for the end numbers and Polly S Easy-Lift-Off for the sides. I've used those and also Solvaset. I used to use a medium eraser (found in a pencil style) after soaking the lettering but have since started using cotton swabs as they cause less surface damage. If I recall correctly (it's been a while since I've done it) SHS cars need to be soaked for a while to loosen the lettering - the AM cars didn't require as long - something I found out the hard way.
