I can't speak directly to the UP, but, in general, Mikes were strictly freight
locos -- relatively small drivers, relatively husky, for great starting power
and fairly limited speed. I know of no
assignments of Mikes to passenger trains on any road, although -- as someone
else on this e-list observed -- anything is possible in an emergency situation.
Example: When a young drunk lost the race to
the crossing and broadsided one of the diesels on my Amtrak Lake Shore Limited
outside Erie PA, two CSX freight locos came to our rescue, hauling us (slowly)
to Cleveland where Amtrak could replace them.
