It is true that Mikes were widely used in freight service, but not exclusively
so. The B&O regularly used Mikes on a few of its local passenger trains that
operated in mountainous territory. Perhaps a B&O fan could tell us exactly
where the trains operated. I believe, too, that the UP used Mikes for certain
passenger trains in mountainous territory. And, as an article in TRAINS long
ago related, the GN used its gigantic O-8 Mikes on troop trains. The 0-8's
were heavier than NKP Berkshires. In addition, during the late Thirties and
thourgh the Forties, the Chicago Great Western used its Harriman Mikes on
passenger runs between Chicago and Oelwein, Iowa. It also occasionally used
Mikes on the day train between the Twin Cities and Omaha, and less frequently
on trains between Oelwein and Kansas City. For the CGW, it was a matter of
necessity: The company had scrapped many Pacifics during the Depression and
simply needed motive power. What better thing to do than to rebuild several
so-called Harriman Mikes for passenger service. I am told that the CGW
outfitted these Mikes with steamboat whistles, and thus you could always know
when a Mike was on the point. Most Mikes had 63-inch drivers and could handle
the schedule of passenger trains on some lines. A few Mikes had smaller
drivers, such as those on the M&StL with 59-inch drivers, and a few had larger
drivers, but 63-inches was the standard. I would not be surprised to learn
that other roads regularly used Mikes on passenger trains. Some people out
there may have information about such operations.
